Loewe’s cult EmRata sneakers are the fashionable alternative to saturated Sambas, worn with style.

Emily Ratajkowski is, for a certain type of people, an indicator of “bold date night” style. That is to say, her name is as synonymous with the words “deep plunge neckline,” “naked dress,” and “low-rise” as it is with Victoria’s Secret and Versace. But she’s also what men’s fashion magazines might describe as a “sneakerhead,” having been one of the original celebrities to endorse the now-ubiquitous Adidas Sambas, and spending the past few months gently promoting the Puma Speedcat as a viable substitute.

It’s understandable that people are starting to withdraw their loyalty to Adidas Samba. The shoe once signaled metropolitan coolness, but it’s now saturated the mainstream to the point where it’s being used as a symbol within Rishi Sunak’s reelection campaign. Because he is, of course, a one percenter. Therefore, EmRata has decided to provide an alternative: Loewe‘s leather and suede ballet sneakers, which she wore yesterday afternoon with an off-the-shoulder jersey dress while strolling through Manhattan.

Different from the fresh-out-of-the-box Sambas worn by Sunak, Ratajkowski’s sneakers have been casually worn with visible scuff marks around the sole, while its foam tongue seems to have yellowed over time. This, to me, is a sneaker in its ideal state: well worn in a way that suggests you’re not precious about the clothes you wear. It reminds me of how the Olsens give permission for their Birkin bags to age and stain because clothes aren’t costumes but are there to be worn.
